Twitter, the micro-blogging and social networking website, is become more and more popular day by day. For muggles, Twitter allows you to send tweets or updates in less than 140 characters and your followers read them while you read your followers’ updates. This might sound totally stupid and useless, but just create an account at Twitter, follow some people including me and start tweeting to see the magic of this world.
Generally we tweet from Twitter.com, but other third party softwares and web interfaces can also be used. Tweeting from mobile is really cool and exciting, some softwares even allow you to update your status as from Rs 1, you can read my post on uTweetMe if you are interested in this.
After getting used to Twitter world, you will soon notice that some of your followers send you replies on your tweets. Now you are tweeting from your mobile and someone sends you a reply, it will be quite impossible for you to know about it and it will definitely be a waste of time and money to turn on your computer to go to Twitter or access Twitter mobile’s interface.
It will glad for you to know that Twitter sends free SMS to your mobile phone but also sad to know that this service is available to only some countries and Mauritius is not included in that list. In order to solve this problem, we have written off this original guide to allow you to receive your Twitter replies freely in your mobile phone. This guide works for Emtel and Orange in Mauritius and 80 other carriers in the whole world.
Generally in this guide, along with SMS Gateways, RSS feeds and Twitter Search will also be used. Before proceeding, to take note of the following important points:
- To know if you are among those 80 carriers which provides SMS Gateway, visit Wikipedia SMS Gateway Lists
- To know if the SMS Gateway really works, try sending an e-mail to the gateway(yournumber@thesmsgateway.com), example, (1234567@emtelworld.net) for Emtel Mauritius
- The SMS Gateway may or may not work depending on these possible factors: traffic usage at that moment, your location, network availibility, your e-mail service, your phone number or simply your luck
- For Orange Mauritius users, the SMS Gateway is 230*******@cellplusmms.mu It’s necessary to activate MMS in your mobile phone for Orange Mauritius by sending MMS to 8200 by SMS
- Other users from different carriers might also try to activate MMS on their mobile phones if the SMS Gateways are not working properly.
- If you cannot receive the e-mail you sent to your SMS Gateway, you can still follow the steps below but when you reach Step 2, you can put your phone number in the bar concerned.
- The username of the person who sent you the reply as well a link to the tweet is at the end of the message.
- The reply sent to your mobile might also be divided into several parts or text messages if it’s quite long
- This service is generally free and thus does not require any registration or balance on your mobile but all these might also depend on your carrier.
- Tip: Sometimes, checking your balance might allow you to receive the Twitter replies. Example: Emtel users might check their balance by using *122#
Step 1: Getting an RSS Feed of your Twitter Replies
1. This will be a model of the RSS Feed of your Twitter Replies:
http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=@yourname
2. Do replace the last part “yourname” again by your Twitter username.
Step 2: Configuring your RSS Feed with Pingie.com and the SMS Gateway
1. Go to Pingie Website and you will see a dialog box asking for your e-mail adress, phone number and RSS Feed.

2. Put your phone number in the phone number bar(along with +areacode), this is important for users who couldn’t receive the message by using the SMS Gateway. But users who received the SMS Gateway message properly can fill both the e-mail adress(see below) and the phone number. But remember, you may start receiving two identical messages in your mobile phone, one from Pingie and the other from the SMS Gateway. So you might either add a false phone number(like 12345678) or a false e-mail adress.
3. Fill your SMS Gateway in the e-mail adress bar, your SMS Gateway should be yournumber@yoursmsgateway.com as mentioned in the important points above. This might not be necessary as mentioned just in the previous instruction.
4. The RSS Feed should be of the same model as mentioned in Step 1 above.
5. Click Submit and write a password for security purpose
Congratulations, Twitter replies have been configured for your mobile phone. You may now receive them freely and in real-time.
